Learning to Listen: Begin with God’s Word
Sometimes the desire to hear from God comes with a rush of questions. What is my purpose? Am I taking the right step? What if I miss what He is saying?
Those questions can make us feel as though we need a complete plan before we can move forward. Jesus’ words in John 10 draw our attention to the Shepherd and our relationship with Him.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”
John 10:27 · KJV
Get to know the Shepherd.
In this verse, hearing His voice sits alongside being known by Him and following Him. Listening belongs to a relationship with Jesus.
When you open your Bible, start with the passage in front of you. Ask: What does this show me about God? What has He made clear? How can I respond in faith today?
Make room for one small beginning.
Read John 10:1–18 and John 10:27–30 slowly. Notice how Jesus describes His care for His sheep. Choose one truth to write down. Ask God to help you understand what you have read.
You may still have unanswered questions when you close your Bible. Allow yourself to keep learning. Even on an ordinary, quiet day, you can return to God’s Word and give Him your attention.
Follow what is clear.
Discerning your purpose can take time. While you are learning, you can respond to what Scripture already teaches. Love someone well. Speak truthfully. Forgive. Serve where you are.
A powerful impression or peaceful feeling, by itself, is not proof that God has spoken. Bring what you think you hear to Scripture, and seek wise counsel for important decisions.
Pause and reflect.
What is one thing today’s reading reveals about Jesus, and what small step can I take in response?
A simple prayer.
Father, thank You for knowing me and caring for me. Help me understand Your Word and recognize what is true. Give me patience while I am learning and courage to follow what You have made clear. Teach me to listen with humility and walk with You today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
You can keep learning as you walk. Open His Word. Bring Him your questions. Take the next faithful step.
